ABSTRACT
This article is at the intersection of AI, language education, and minority/under-resourced languages. The aim of this article is (i) to offer insights into AI in language education currently and (ii) to mention some of the significant hurdles that need to be overcome, especially in the context of languages with fewer speakers and resources, in this case Irish. A brief overview is given of a speech-based, AI-enhanced platform for Irish-language teaching/learning, An Scéalaí. This is discussed in the context of experiments run to ascertain the usefulness of a large language model (GPT), trained mainly on English-language data, in generating Irish-language content. The article concludes with a call for thoughtful design for strategic integration of AI in educational settings, guided by comprehensive research and policy development so that AI-enhanced systems will benefit learners and teachers of Irish.
