‘Going with the flow of life’: another look at aspects of travel literature
Abstract
This article examines aspects of contemporary travel literature in Irish. A distinction is made between travel writing without any literary quality and travel literature which is an artful work of the imagination. The article is an attempt to develop a different way of reading travel literature in Irish as an alternative to the ‘political’ way of reading common in academic literature on this genre with its focus on identity and alterity, gender, interculturalism and sociolinguistics. Instead, a way of reading is suggested which puts the pleasure of travel and the pleasure of literature at the heart of the matter. Three concepts are used in this attempt: ‘Flow’, the ‘carnavalesque’ and ‘limit experiences’.
