‘A Bhean lán de Stuaim’: Background and Classification

Abstract

This article provides a synopsis of previous commentary on ‘A Bhean lán de Stuaim’, the famous poem which is ascribed to Geoffrey Keating (c.1580–c.1644). Those who have argued that it is part of an overall tradition of inverting amour courtois convention as well as that of preaching have a point. But that is not to say that the poem may be packaged in any one way. It is in the portrait of the woman, for example, that its radical originality and mysterious draw are to be felt.

Conas a dhéantar tagairt don alt seo?

Athbhreithniú agus athléamh a chuirtear ar fáil san alt seo ar an dán cáiliúil ‘A Bhean lán de Stuaim’ atá luaite le Seathrún Céitinn (c.1580–c.1644). Tá an ceart acu sin a shuíonn é i dtraidisiún na frithchúirtéise agus na seanmóireachta, ach ní fhágann san gur féidir é a phacáistiú in aon tslí amháin faoi leith. Is i bportráid na mná, mar shampla, atá a bhunúlacht radacach agus a tharraingt dhiamhair le brath.
