In 1933 Pádraig Ó Buachalla translated Le avventure di Pinocchio (1881) by Carlo Collodi from Italian into Irish. In 2003, Coiste LitrÃochta Mhúscraà published a new edition of Ó Buachalla’s translation, edited by Seán Ua Súilleabháin agus Dáibhà Ó CróinÃn. This article takes a fresh look at this wonderful translation of a world classic and asks why it still speaks to us today in the 21st century. Following Giacamo Biffi, the article suggests that some of the themes in the book (what is freedom? What makes us human?) are more relevant today than ever.
